Radiolarian

Radiolarians are single-celled organisms belonging to the kingdom Protista. They are found in marine environments, where they are abundant in plankton. They have a distinctive silica-based skeleton, which can be very intricate and beautiful, and is often used in jewelry and other decorative items. Radiolarians use their pseudopodia, or extensions of their cytoplasm, to capture and engulf small organisms for food. They are important in the marine food chain, and their fossils are also useful for studying past ocean conditions and climate change.
