Rheopexy



Rheopexy is a term used in rheology, which is the study of the flow and deformation of materials under stress. Specifically, rheopexy refers to the property of certain non-Newtonian fluids to thicken or solidify over time when subjected to a constant shear stress. This behavior is the opposite of thixotropy, which describes the tendency of some fluids to become less viscous over time under a constant shear stress.
Rheopexy is commonly observed in materials such as drilling muds, cement slurries, and some food products. It is often desirable in these applications because it can improve stability, reduce settling, and enhance suspension properties. However, in other situations, such as the processing of certain chemicals or pharmaceuticals, rheopexy may be a disadvantage because it can hinder mixing or complicate flow.
